Last month, I spoke at the University of Chicago as part of an event entitled “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Empire: Humanitarian Intervention and Neo-Orientalism.” Sponsored by the Muslim Students Association, the event also included Oxford Professor Tariq Ramadan, law professor and U.N. war crimes expert M. Cherif Bassiouni, and University of Chicago Professor Jennifer Pitts. My talk, roughly 30 minutes long, focused on how so-called “humanitarian interventions” are manipulatively used to justify wars of aggression and self-interest, and can be heard on the player below. UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Several prisoners likely were tortured to death at a detention center in Libya under government control, the United Nations said on Thursday as it urged the country to make stamping out such practices a top priority.

Thousands of supporters of Colonel Gaddafi are being detained, with some tortured in secret prisons by revolutionary brigades, the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya says. Rights groups have already raised the alarm on torture in Libyan prisons.

“Ian Martin, head of the UN mission to Libya, said good progress was being made toward the country’s first democratic election, but militia prisons were one of a number of “serious obstacles” to establishing the rule of law.

“Cases of mistreatment and torture of detainees continue,” Martin told the UN Security Council. The UN has raised “deep concern” over the deaths in April of three people at a prison in Misrata which comes under government authority.

There was “credible information” that the deaths were caused by torture and that at least seven other people had been tortured at the same prison, said the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, or UNSMIL.

There have also been allegations of torture at prisons in Tripoli, Zawiya and Zintan.
The UN said in October that 7,000 prisoners, mainly supporters of Muammar Gaddafi, were held by the revolutionary brigades which led the fight to overthrown the late leader last year.”
